Academic Pre-Requisites
• Students must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible for application.
• All students must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5 at the time of application, and must have completed two semesters at the college level before the class in Japan begins. These pre-requisites are the prerogatives of the host institution; the Japan Center for Michigan Universities. All WCC students must therefore meet the same expectations as other college / university students registering for the class via JCMU.
• Students are required to have a basic understanding of Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera techniques from the completion of PHO 111 [or equivalent] — with the grade of 'B-' or higher.
Hardware and Software Requirements
• A Digital SLR camera [12-megapixel sensor or greater] that is also capable of shooting in an HD video mode, portable computer, and 500GB to 1TB [thunderbolt compatible] portable hard drive [or larger] are required in Japan.
— Photo students must have a recent version of Adobe Lightroom CC installed.
— Photo students must have a recent version of iMove or equivalent installed to enable basic video processing.
— All students are strongly encouraged to have a recent version of Adobe Photoshop CC installed.
— The portable computer you bring to Japan should be in excellent working order, possess a current version of its OS, and also possess adequate RAM to support the digital files being imported into your editing software.
• Cameras, lenses, and portable computers with software are available for WCC students currently registered in the Photo program, to borrow from the Photo Department, if necessary.
• Portable hard drives, software, and peripherals are required costs borne by each student.
• Ask your instructor about all of these specifications if you plan to bring your own hardware/software.
Other Pre-Departure Issues
• Students registered for either of these classes are subject to being interviewed by the instructors prior to earning their approval status. Some of the general questions may pertain to your current physical health status, and whether any current condition may create cause for taking preventative actions prior to departure.
In recognition of each student's privacy, and to stay within legal boundaries, you will NOT be asked to disclose detailed and/or sensitive information about your health and physical condition. High expectations implied from each institution are that a student must maintain responsibility for their own health condition while traveling abroad. i.e. bringing and administering the resources to manage one's dietary, mental, and physical health on their own.
In other words, assess the course description, daily itinerary, field sessions, and demands of the course before committing to join the trip.
