- Web Design Elements
25 points
Due: April 7, before class
You will need to surf the web
quite a bit to complete this assignment. Your task is to find ten websites
to refer to and answer the questions below, completely. Please refer to
my Web Design Elements lecture notes for help on this (see: courses.wccnet.org/~tnielsen/design-lecture.htm
or www.tmnielsen.com/GDT150/design-lecture.htm).
The sites you find cannot be sites I mentioned in the lecture,
or sites that we have already talked about in class.
Please create
an HTML page in Dreamweaver to document your answers to these questions.
Make a table that is 650 px wide (so it can be printed), and answer the
questions in ordered list format. Upload the answers and link them from
your GDT 150 page, and also print out a hard copy for me.
- Two sites with really poor
functionality. What are the limitations placed on the user for these
sites, based on the poor functionality? What is your impression of these
companies, based on the fact that their site doesn't work properly?
- An example
of a site with inconsistent navigation from page to page. How did you
feel as you attempted to navigate through this site?
- A site with excessive scrolling.
How would you redesign this site to avoid such scrolling? Please explain.
- Two distinct sites with
major usability issues. Please go into detail describing what problems
exist in these sites.
- A site with really poor
readability. This can be because of poor contrast between foreground/background,
a hard-to-read font, or some other issue.
- A visually overwhelming
or "loud" (color-wise, animation-wise, or otherwise) web page,
where the designer seemed to have no consideration for end-user tastes.
- A website that has inconsistent
alignment and/or lacks visual continuity and cohesiveness.
- A website that has excessive,
lengthy text for the web. Rewrite a couple of sentences used in this
text, making the information more concise and to-the-point.
