Math 169 or 179: Test for Chapter 0

Place your answer in space provide to the left of each question.

Notice: this page changes every time it is loaded, or re-loaded (refreshed).

(Warning: at this point in time, this page works on both Netscape Navigator 4 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 However, it works best with the most recent version of both of those browsers. There are some special precautions to be taken when printing with Netscape (Click here to get directions on printing from Netscape).

At the end of this page there is a button to create the answers in a separate window.

America On-Line uses a modified version of Internet Explorer. It has been my experience that the secondary window does not work in some versions of AOL. The "See Answers" button will cause the AOL browser to open a new window, but then the browser generates an error on that window. If you are using AOL that fails in this way, then click the "No" to close the error message box, and then close the secondary window. Note: you can run IE 4.0 or Netscape from AOL if you have IE 4.0 or Netscape on your computer (and they are free to download). Merely sign onto AOL and then minimize it and start IE 4.0 or Netscape.

Be careful to read all of each problem. Because these pages are produced on the WEB, for printed versions of these pages there is a chance that a problem, or its possible answers, will be split across two pages.

For the following six problems, select the measure of central tendency (mean, median, or mode) which would be most appropriate for the given data. Note that preference should be given to the median over the mean in cases where it would be impossible to have fractional data points.

Questions 26 through 33 are meant to be used by students with a TI-graphing calculator, as may be required in some courses and sections. The programs referenced have been provided to those students for use on their calcualtors. Use the following table of ratio measurements to answer questions 26 through 33 on this test.

____________________ 27. Determine the median of the data.

____________________ 28. Determine the mode of the data.

____________________ 29. Determine the range of the data.

____________________ 30. Determine the 1st and 3rd quartile values of the data.

____________________ 31. Determine the standard deviation of the data. Write your answers rounded to 4 decimal places.
