Chapter 1 Minicase 1

After reading Chapter 1 of the Gillenson text, read Minicase 1 on page 15. Consider the questions in "a" and "b"; jot down your answers, and we will discuss them in class.

Chapter 2 Minicase 1

After reading Chapter 2, do Minicase 1 on page 40, using a word processor to type your answers.

  1. Answer parts i - iv as instructed
  2. Answer parts i - vii by typing the Sailor Name field
  3. Answer parts i - iv by creating a numerical index for each part and using Figues 2.11, 2.12, and 2.13 as examples
  4. Answer this by constructing a diagram like that in Figure 2.15. (We will work through some examples in class.) Use the MS Word document linked here; it has MS Draw shapes for you to manipulate and create your diagram.

Chapter 3 Minicase 1

After reading Chapter 3, do Minicase 1 on page 61, using MS-Draw (in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint) or equivalent software to draw your diagram.

Chapter 9 Minicase 1

After reading Chapter 9, do Minicase 1 on pages 226-7. Please use MS-Access and the cruise.mdb file to create queries using SQL SELECT commands to answer each of the questions, a-m.
Note: when entering dates in MS Access queries, the format is different from that given in the book. The delimiter for dates is #, so a date looks like #7/31/2003#.

Chapter 13 Minicase 1

After reading Chapter 13, do Minicase 1 on pages 309-310. Please use MS-Word. since there is no single "right answer", it is very important how you justify any placement, replication, and/or partitioning you recommend. (And yes, you are expected to recommend a distributed database system.)
