Course Description:

This course teaches all competencies required by the Washtenaw Community College Computer and Information Literacy associate degree graduation requirement. If students have not met this requirement by passing the Computer and Information Literacy test, they may meet it by completing and passing this course. Competencies covered include: graphical user interface, basic word processing, basic spreadsheet, file management, the Internet, and e-mail. Basic computer concepts such as operating systems, hardware, software, networks, and legal and security issues are also taught.

Prerequisites:

There are no prerequisites for this course.

    and 3rd Edition Computers Understanding Technology, Brief by Fuller and Larson, 2008

Grading Policy:

CIS099 is a pass/fail course. Thus you will not receive an actual grade! You will only receive a grade of pass if you receive 70 points or better. Your grade will be based on the following:

6 Assignments worth 10 points each 60% or your grade
2 exams worth 20 points each 40% of your grade

The due dates for the assignments and the dates of the exams are shown on the syllabus.
Late assignments may be marked down 25%.
If you are absent the day of an exam, you may make it up no later than the beginning of the next class period (before I hand the other students' exams back). (See the teacher if this proves impossible.)

Miscellaneous:

Outside of class time you may use the Computer Commons on the second floor of the library in the GM building (973-3420). There are tutors and aids available to help you in the Computer Commons and at Learning Support Services in LA 104 (973-3342).

Although you are encouraged to help each other, the work you hand in must be your own. If you are caught cheating or are guilty of plagiarism, you may be sanctioned as described in the "Washtenaw Community College Student Rights & Responsibilities" handbook.
