Course Description:

This course teaches presentation software concepts and applications using Microsoft PowerPoint in a Windows operating system. Skills and concepts include creating, editing, formatting, and enhancing presentations; using outline view and clip art to create a slide show; using embedded visuals to enhance a slide show; enhancing a presentation with interactive OLE files; and creating Web pages. Applying presentation software concepts and functions to business environments is stressed. Students should be familiar with Windows and have keyboarding skills of at least 25 wpm.

Prerequisites

Academic reading and writing of Level 6.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to...

  1. Open, edit, and save a presentation.
  2. Creating a presentation using design themes and templates.
  3. Create a presentation from scratch.
  4. Add speaker's notes, headers and footers to a presentation.
  5. Use the spelling checker.
  6. Create and use hyperlinks and outlines.
  7. Save and publish a presentation as a Web Page.
  8. Use AutoShapes and WordArt.
  9. Apply design templates and color schemes from other presentations.
  10. Customize handout and notes masters.
  11. Create, edit, and format charts, diagrams and tables.
  12. Use animation and slide show effects.

Text: Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007: The Professional Approach Series, by Pat R. Graves and Amie Mayhall, McGraw-Hill Higher Education

Supplies: USB Flash Memory drive

Grading Policy:

Your grade will be based on the following:

2 quizzes 10% each
2 Exams 20% each
Exercises from the textbook 40%

Your final letter grade will be determined as follows:

All hard copy assignments must have your name printed, not handwritten, on them.

Late Assignments - The due dates for the assignments and the dates of the quizzes and exams are shown below. Late assignments may be marked down 25%.
You may email the instructor the assignment on or before the due date if you will be absent.

Missed Exams - If you are absent the day of a quiz or exam, you must take it before the beginning of the next class. Please make arrangements with the instructor.

Extra Credit - See the instructor for extra credit. You may improve your final grade up to 5 percentage points by earning extra credit.

Outside of class time you may use the Computer Commons on the second floor of the library in the GM building (973-3420). There are tutors and aids available to help you in the Computer Commons and at Learning Support Services in LA 104 (973-3342).
