Course Description:

This course teaches spreadsheet concepts and applications using Microsoft Excel in a Windows operating system. Skills and concepts include creating, formatting and editing a worksheet; entering formulas and using Excel functions; preparing charts; creating templates, workbooks, and Web pages; creating and using macros, sorting and filtering worksheet databases; and creating data maps and pivot tables. Applying spreadhseet concepts and functions to business environments is stressed.

Prerequisites

Students should be familiar with the Windows operating system and have keyboarding skills of at least 25 wpm.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to...

  1. Open, edit, save and print a Workbook.
  2. Use AutoCorrect, AutoFill, and AutoFormat.
  3. Add labels using AutoComplete and Pick from List.
  4. Create simple and complex formulas.
  5. Use the built-in IF, AND, OR, NOT, FV, PMT, INT, and ROUND functions.
  6. Create and use hyperlinks.
  7. Build, edit, and print charts.
  8. Add design elements, including conditional formatting.
  9. Work with multiple work sheets, lists, and outlines.
  10. Work with range names.
  11. Use and build templates.
  12. Record, edit, and run macros.
  13. Add validation.
  14. Create and manage scenarios.
  15. Consolidate data and link workbooks.
  16. Use workgroup features.
  17. Import Word, text, database, and HTML data.
  18. Use database features.
  19. Create pivot charts and one and two variable tables.

Grading Policy:

Your grade will be based on the following:

3 Exams 20% each
Exercises from the textbook 40%

All hard copy assignments must have your name printed, not handwritten, on them.

Extra Credit - See me for extra credit. You may improve your final grade up to 2 percentage points by earning extra credit. See me with your suggestions for extra credit.

Your final letter grade will be determined as follows:

Missed Exams - If you are absent the day of a quiz or exam, you must take it before, or at, the beginning of the next class. Please make arrangements with the instructor.

Miscellaneous - Outside of class time you may use the Computer Commons on the second floor of the library in the GM building (973-3420). There are tutors available to help you there and in the Learning Support Services office in LA 104, telephone 973-3342.
