COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is the third in a series of three keyboarding courses. It is designed for students who have completed BOS 101B or who can key a minimum of 30 words per minute. Students increase their speed and accuracy and improve their technique. Students are evaluated early in the course and may be placed in BOS 101A or BOS 101B based on the results of the evaluation. This course is offered in a self-paced format. Coursework must be completed by the end of the semester.

BOS 101B or approval of instructor

REQUIRED TEXT:

Keychamp Enhanced Version Sharp, Olinzock, and Santos; South-Western Educational Publishing, 2003

MATERIALS:

Student files will be saved on a network drive on campus. No data storage medium required.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to

  1. Improve alphabetic and numeric keyboarding speed to a minimum of 41 words per minute for a three-minute timing with a maximum of three errors.
  2. Identify and correct errors on typed copy.
  3. Apply proofreaders’ symbols to rough-draft copy.
  4. Demonstrate correct touch keyboarding techniques in completing all assignments.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Attendance is necessary for supervised participation and for instruction not available in the textbook.

Depending on the student’s computer background, outside work and practice may be necessary to complete assignments. Lab time is available in the Computer Commons on the second floor of the library in the GM Building (973-3420). Ask the lab aids to show you which computers have the typing programs installed.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

A minimum of three different one-minute timings completed in class with no more than one error per minute is required. Students must key a minimum of three timings in the following gwam range to earn that grade.

50+ gwam = A38 gwam = D+
48 or 49 gwam = A-36 or 37 gwam =D
47 gwam = B+35 gram = D-
45 or 46 gwam = Bbelow 35 = F
44 gwam = B- 
42 or 43 gwam = C+ 
41 gwam = C 
39 or 40 gwam = C- 

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

As part of the class conduct code, if you are caught cheating or are guilty of plagiarism, you will receive an "F" grade for the assignment or exam. The incident will be documented, and a copy will be forwarded to the Dean of Business for further review and possible institutional sanctions.
