COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is first in a series of three keyboarding courses. This course teaches students to keyboard by touch and develop speed, accuracy, and proper techniques on the alphabetic keys. This course is offered only in a self-paced format. Coursework must be completed by the end of the semester.

None

REQUIRED TEXT:

College Keyboarding 17E: Keyboarding & Word Processing, Lessons 1—25, for Microsoft Word® 2007 VanHuss, Forde, and Woo; South-Western, Cengage Learning, 2008

MATERIALS:

None required for on-campus work. Files can be saved on the network.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to

  1. Launch and exit the keyboarding program.
  2. Demonstrate proper position at the computer keyboard.
  3. Demonstrate the use of service keys.
  4. Send documents to the printer for hard copies.
  5. Demonstrate correct alphabetic reaches by touch.
  6. Space correctly around punctuation marks.
  7. Increase touch-typing proficiency to a minimum of 24 gwam for one minute with no more than one error.
  8. Determine gwam.
  9. Proof copy and correct errors.
  10. Use word wrap for line endings.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Attendance is necessary for supervised participation and for instruction not available in the textbook.

Depending on the student’s computer background, outside work and practice may be necessary to complete assignments. Lab time is available in the Computer Commons on the second floor of the library in the GM Building (973-3420). Ask the lab aids to show you which computers have the typing programs installed.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

A minimum of three different one-minute timings completed in class with no more than one error per minute is required. Students must key a minimum of three timings in the following gwam range to earn that grade.

30+ gwam = A22 gwam = D+
29 gwam = A-21 gwam =D
28 gwam = B+20 gram = D-
27 gwam = Bbelow 20 = F
26 gwam = B- 
25 gwam = C+ 
24 gwam = C 
23 gwam = C- 

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

As part of the class conduct code, if you are caught cheating or are guilty of plagiarism, you will receive an "F" grade for the assignment or exam. The incident will be documented, and a copy will be forwarded to the Dean of Business for further review and possible institutional sanctions.
