Winter 2019 PREVIEW
This course provides a concentration on contemporary studio practices that are inclusive of advanced image construction techniques and the business issues relevant to their production. Students integrate their previous studio and imaging experiences (traditional or digital capture) with the pre- and post-production, critical thinking skills required to produce a job. Emphasis is placed on the business and ethical issues behind the creation of images for retail portraiture, commercial publication, and fine-art sectors of the industry.
Students implement a wide range of professional practices; from identifying the rationale behind their own creative fee, to determining the actual pricing of their images by means of documents such as estimates, invoices, delivery memos, and release forms for models and/or property. Students refine a vocabulary that builds their visual literacy skills, so as to decipher the meaning of images in our culture, be capable to articulate the ideas of their own work, and be conversant in the medium of photography with their peers, employers, and future instructors. Emphasis is also placed on ethical issues in regard to copyright law and usage rights of images created for publication.
Idea-driven assignments direct students to visually clarify more than just the facts about objects and people, and encourage the development of a point-of-view on the facts. The utilization of props, wardrobe and make-up, and possibly even location is encouraged while simultaneously managing a balance of compositional simplicity and execution to create visual impact. Important ideas about career management and self-promotion are also discussed.
