Project Module W78s
Web Site Project Management

Phase S: Add Graphics, Colors, Fonts, and Text Content

Previous | Series Home | Next

Overview

This is where it all comes together: the client's text, your text, images, fonts, and colors. A CSS style sheet is created, and all the elements are united into a Web site. Of course, testing and modification will follow, but this is where it begins to look like a finished product.

The diagram here shows the relations between clients, their input, and members of the team:

Client and team roles

Here are the procedural details of how the graphics, colors, fonts, and texts are added, giving usual assignments to members of the team.

Clients provide:

  • Branding, Design, Look and Feel specifications (Phase K) used by the coder and graphic designer
  • Policies: general guidelines about how they want content, navigation, and appearance on the site (what to do and what not to do) used by everybody on the team.
  • Graphics for the graphic designer to use
  • Text for the data specialist or coder, depending on team assignments and file format of the text.

Team Members' Roles

In relatively small teams or projects, more than one of the roles described below may be assigned to the same person. Conversely, in larger projects there may be more than one individual assigned to some of the roles.

  • Coder
    • Receives information from clients, graphic designer, and editor or data specialist
    • Uses wireframe layout pages from Phase J

    • Creates new designs as needed
    • Works with coder to set up CSS file with appropriate colors, fonts, and layout to achieve the requested look and feel

    • Convert file formats as needed, working with the coder
    • Pass text and other relevant material to the editor for review and modification
    • Write appropriate text when not provided by the client
    • Keep track of files on the site, making backups frequently
  • Editor
    • Receive written material from client and data specialist
    • Modify written material as needed for consistency, grammar, spelling, and usage
    • Pass material to the coder for inclusion in coded pages
  • Information Architect (not shown in diagram)
    • Receive input from client regarding general organization of the site
    • Design navigation and labeling based on client and user input
    • Work with coder to incorporate navigation and labeling into the coded pages
  • Tester / QA
    • Examines coded Web pages at various stages of development
    • Checks to make sure links and images work correctly
    • Reads material to double-check editing
    • Organizes user testing
    • Reports results of testing to team leader and appropriate team members
  • Team Leader (not shown in diagram)
    • Interfaces with client to get input and convey it to appropriate team members
    • Works with team members to create a realistic schedule that meets client time and content requirements as well as possible with the available resources
    • Checks with each team member to make sure s/he has needed resources
