Continuation of Module W11h, "World Wide Web Hands-On 2"

This is http://www.wccnet.org/dept/cis/mod/w11h_2b.htm.
Read and follow the instructions here. You may find it helpful to print them, but it's not required.

2b. Copying and Pasting Text Hammer

Now that you have successfully copied a URL and used it to get to a Web site, you can use the same technique to copy from a text paragraph and paste into another document.
  1. Highlight the paragraph above (Now...document) as you did the URL. Since this is more than one line long, you can start at the upper left corner and drag the pointer (holding down the left mouse button) to the lower right.
  2. Again use <Ctrl>C to make a copy in the "clipboard". Scissors
Read the following set of instructions before doing them - you will not be able to have them on the screen while you do them!
  1. If your computer runs with Windows: Click on the Start button at the left end of the Taskbar, usually at the bottom of the screen. (For Macintosh details on copying and pasting, return to the main document by clicking here.)
  2. Find and open the Program group.
  3. Select the Accessories group; find and open the Notepad program.

  4. Type your name, class, section and Exercise identification at the top of the Notepad file.

and press the <Enter> or <Return> key
  5. Use <Ctrl>V to paste the text in. Since Notepad has only one font, it will look rather different from its appearance in Netscape, but the text should be the same.
  6. Save your Notepad file using File...Save to your diskette. Name it W11h (or anything else that will let you identify it later). Don't exit from Notepad - you'll be needing it soon!
  7. If you can't see Netscape, restore it by finding its button Netscape Button on the Windows Taskbar. (On the Mac, you can find it on the Applications menu.) You should then be able to see this text again.
You can paste from Netscape into any Mac or Windows application (though not into DOS programs). This is a useful way to get research findings from the Web into your reports.

3. Setting Preferences Hammer

Open the Preferences window by using the Edit...Preferences menu option. In each of the sections mentioned, try the options noted.

Appearance: Font

  1. To try: Change the variable font to something else on the list, just to see how you like it. Make the size larger and again, see how you like it. Try it at a smaller size.

Colors

  1. Open the Preferences window and select Colors
  2. Click (if necessary) the check-box to turn off "Use Windows colors"
  3. Choose a text and background color you think will be readable
  4. Click (if necessary) the check-box to turn on "Always use my colors, overriding document."
  5. Click OK to see the result!
  6. PLEASE restore the defaults after you've seen the results. Re-open the Preferences windows, select Colors, and click the check-boxes so that "Always use my colors..." has no checkmark, and "Use Windows colors" is checkmarked.

Navigator

  1. Try this: put in the WCC home page, www.wccnet.org and set it to be the startup page.

3b. Return to a Previous Site using the Go Menu Hammer

We are now ready to return to the main W11h file. Here's how:
  1. Pull down the Go menu
  2. Look at the numbered listing of sites you have visited during this session
  3. There should be one labelled "World Wide Web Hands-On 2 (W11h) - L. Krieg, WCC". Click on it to return.
If you couldn't find that listing, use the Copy-and-Paste method to get back. Here's the URL:
