Reading: Smith and Christoph, Chapter 7. Note: Even though the exercise is not from the book, reading the chapter is important so you will know how to do the activities.
Needed:
Exercise: Follow the instructions below
Turn in: 1 printed page as described below.
For this exercise, you will be completing a spreadsheet to track your CIS 100 score. You will put in the formulas according to instructions here, fill in your grades received so far, and turn in the results.
1. Log in to the network according to the directions on pages 1-2 of the exercise handout.
2. Copy the proper file to your diskette. There is a slightly different file for each section, with the correct class dates in each one. Here is the command to do this (be sure to put spaces where they are shown, but don't any extra spaces!):
3. Start Microsoft Windows and Works for Windows in the usual way. From your diskette in drive B:, open the spreadsheet you just copied from the network.
Next, take the "raw" file and put in your name, the formulas, and the formats needed to make it look nice. (An example is printed at the end of this exercise.)
4. Put you name in the upper right, cell E1.
5. Type the formula to calculate the number of Points for an item in cell F6. It is calculated by multiplying the Earned% (E6) by the item's Worth (D6).
6. Highlight cells F6:F44; then use Edit ... fill Down to copy the formula into the remaining item lines.
7. Highlight cells F6:F49, and use formaT ... fiXed ... 1 to show only one decimal place in that column.
8. Highlight the Earned% column, E6:E48. Format it as Percent with 0 (zero) decimal places.
9. Put in the special formulas and formats for journal and personal project scores:
10. Put the current date in cell B3 using the formula
=now()
11. Put the formula for the total possible points in cell D49. It should sum up cells D6:D47.
12. Put the formula for the total points you earned in cell F49. It will sum F6:F48.
13. Format these special cells for high visibility using formaT ... Style:
14. Your scoresheet "template" is now ready. Save it!
Finally, put your own scores in the spreadsheet and print the result.
15. Enter your scores in the Earned% column.
16. Print the spreadsheet. (Use Print ... preView to make sure the printout fits on one page. Adjust the print size and margins if necessary. If you are not sure how to adjust these, look in Chapter 6 for details!)
17. Exit Works and log out. You are done!
During the rest of the term, you can keep updating your scores to see how you are doing in the class. Please do not turn in a paper printout more than once! This exercise is worth 4 points, one time only.
Here is an example of what the finished product should look like. Don't be concerned about minor differences.
