Internet Chat is a synchronous communication technique using text transmitted over the Internet. You can learn about it in "Chat on the Internet", Module NA60c.
Since Chat is synchronous, other people have to be available to chat when you want to do this exercise. For that reason, it makes a good classroom or small-group exercise. In that case, the instructions in Option 1 should suit you. If you have nobody to work with, you may use Option 2.
What to Do
- Point your Web browser to a Web-based chat facility, such as "Chat Machine" http://chat.machine.net/ or "Delphi Forums" http://www.delphi.com/dir-delphi/. (For more options, check the Reference section of module NA60c.)
- One person (student volunteer or instructor) sets up a "chat room" or "forum" for the class or group.
- Set your user name to be something recognizable by your classmates or teammates and instructor.
- Choose any distinctive color and font options that may be appropriate.
- After the new "chat room" has been created, all should enter and send a greeting to the others.
- Each participant should either initiate or respond to a comment from the others.
- For extra practice, send a "private" message to another member of the group.
Grading
- If your exercise is being done in class, the instructor will grade you according to your participation.
- If the exercise is carried on outside of class, email your instructor with a summary of the advantages and disadvantages you found in using the Chat technique and the Web access software you used.
