What to Do on Internet Explorer
We're assuming you are running Windows or a Macintosh, and that Internet Explorer
is available.
Point
to the Microsoft Internet Explorer icon and open it (Double-click or click
once and press <Enter>)
- When Explorer runs, center or maximize the screen. (To maximize in Windows,
click on the button with a rectagle in the upper left corner of the window
- see illustration.)

- You may see the "home page" for your class; if so, continue with the next
step. If not, select the File...Open menu item and type in
the entire address of the class home page, (or if you're viewing this
in a browser click on the link). Your instructor can tell you which home page
to use if it is not on this list. (Be sure to type every letter exactly
as shown!)
- When you are looking
at the class home page: scroll down to see all the page. Use the "scroll bar"
in the right
border
of the window. The scroll bar appears when there is too much of a document
to see in a window. It has a slider that moves up and down rather like an
elevator, to tell you how far through the document you are, and to let you
move to other parts. To move down, you may either:
- Click below the slider;
- Drag the slider downward;
- Hold down the down-pointing
arrow at the bottom of the scroll bar.
- Visit the class Syllabus.
It is listed under "Syllabus" toward the bottom of the page. The underlined
words are "links": clicking on them takes you to another Web document, or
another part of the same document. This is how the World Wide Web lets you
access information. So when you find the link, Syllabus, you can simply point
to it with your mouse, and click (once is enough!).
- Come back to the home
page. To get back to wherever you came from, find the "Back" button on the
toolbar (it's at the far left) and click on it.
- Visit the class schedule,
and any other links you find. Come back to the Home Page using the "Back"
button.
- When you're done with the browser, click the close button. In Windows, this is
the X in the extreme upper right corner of the (just right of the Maximize button
illustrated above).
Audience: This is for people who know how to use computers and want
to get started using a Web browser.
Objectives: When you successfully complete this lesson, you will be
able to...
- Run a Web browser
- Enter an address in the Address window
- Use the scroll bar and Back button
