GeneralInstructions

This set of three exercises is written for Health Studies students at WashtenawCommunity College. The purpose is to get acquainted with MicroMedex,a full-featured computerized medical database.

We currently get access to MicroMedex at the United States VeteransAffairs Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This involves using theVA Hospital's training room, thanks to arrangements made by Pamela McCoy,Clinical Program Coordinator, and the efforts every term of Dennis Seymour,Computer Security Officer. We salute them for their help, without whichthis experience would not be possible!

In order to use the system, you must have a valid VA access code andverify code. Use of these and the DHCP systemthrough which we use MicroMedex is explained in ModuleM31hd. MicroMedex uses the keyboard in a different way than most microcomputerprograms. You will be given MicroMedex instructions with keyboarddiagrams to help you. You'll want those in front of you as wellas these instructions, printed.

Most students find these exercises quite challenging:they are based on real-life experience; they also assume command of medicaland pharmaceutical vocabulary. Do your best: the grading will be fair, taking into account the challenging nature of the assignment.

Each of the studies is worth five points,so you may do two for normal exercise credit, and do the third (if youhave time) for extra credit.
